Google Maps Augmented Reality AR Update
Going back to February 2019, I was talking about Google AR update. Now the new Augmented Reality feature is live on Google Maps for specific countries.
The feature was available on Google Pixel devices and is now available to a much wider range of Android phones and iPhones. It consists of showing real-time navigation in Google Maps through your phone’s camera. Simply hold your phone up next to streets to see arrows and directions overlaid on top of the camera view to make it far easier to locate buildings and your destination.
Android devices that support ARCore or iPhones that include ARKit support will be able to access Google Maps Live View in beta starting the 2nd week of August and the feature will only work in countries where Google Street View is available. This is how you can test out Live View:
Search for a location you want to walk to or tap it on a map
Tap on the directions button at the bottom
Select walking directions at the top of the screen
Tap on the new Live View option at the bottom of the screen
Google Maps users will soon be able to view their flight and hotel reservations directly from the mobile app and use augmented reality to direct them as they travel on foot. These new features are part of Google’s expanded Maps offerings aimed at travelers.
